In collaboration with Austin Lilly
Providing light for the city for some time, giving back to the environment forever after.
Art Pavilion/Elevated Experience/Landmark
Site
The Site is located in Miami Beach, Florida. Along Ocean Ct. between South Pointe Dr. and 15th St. The site is located between Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive which are very busy streets in Miami.
Brainstorming
Design Question:
how do we provide light to make an uninviting space feel comfortable for pedestrians?
Design Constraints:
Thin alleyways
Working around the electrical lines.
Creating a structure overhead that provide the programmatic needs.
Design Area of Focus:
making a place that is uninviting to a seasonal landmark.
Create a temporary structure that provides for people temporarily and for the environment forever
Creating dialog about the environment and sea level rise.
Design Idea:
Unicellular plankton dinoflagellate also called Noctiluca, or sea sparkle. Noctiluca are so small that thousands of them can fit in a single drop of water.
They have a symbiotic relationship with coral reefs and neither can survive without each other.
The plankton activates light due to movement of the surrounding water.
Creating a hollow structure that can house the dinoflagellate and its supporting organisms.
Dinoflagellates need nutrients! we make a modular system each with its own enclosed system of the algae and open planters of which the Florida native plants can grow in and create a symbiotic microenvironment with the algae allowing for the algae to continue to grow and light while also providing nutrients for the Florida native plants.
Make the system something that can be easily moved to different locations, to be replanted back to the environment.
Specific Site
The specific site is located on Ocean Ct. between 10th and 12th street.
Site Rooftop Access

Plan

Layers of BioGrow

Program
The rooftop accesses are the focal point of our pavilions, though the whole structure is an elevated experience the entry ways are where the temporary art is displayed for the public's enjoyment.
We created different paths for circulation through the rooftops allowing the visitor to make a choice to participate in the learning or to only transition through the space.

Yearly Ritual
The installation will be on for 6 months out of the year during the colder months. The main structure will then be returned, to Biscayne bay to create a manmade Mangrove habitat and the lower structure will be dropped off the coast of Miami to create a man-made coral reef.
This yearly event will be a touristic attraction where everyone can be there to see it go to the environment to make it better, creating awareness and encouraging action.
